Straws the Clown
(a.k.a. Joel Rubert) has been clowning since 1988. He has received top awards
from International clown associations as well as State and Local clown
associations. Just to mention a couple, First Place Make-up and Wardrobe
competition from Clowns of America International and
6 time First-place state
balloon-twisting champion from Texas Clown Association.
When Straws first started clowning his mother
(Smiley the Clown, click here to view) taught
him the basics. He then went on to attend clown school at Houston based
Cheerful Clown Alley Clown School and then received special one-on-one training
from a professional clown tutor. He then started attending clown
conventions and seminars and honed his talents with acting
classes at University of Houston.
Straws has reached one of his goals.
While attending the clown conventions, Straws really wanted to be at the same point of professionalism as the lecturers were. To be able to make other clowns
laugh and to teach the finer arts of clowning was his goal. He is now a sought after lecturer and
teacher of clowns and has served at International, State, and Local levels
teaching other clowns how to be better clowns.
Straws is living his dream, he has
entertained at thousands of birthday parties, churches, daycares, public
schools, company picnics and has even had the honor of volunteering to
entertain children not only in the U.S.A. but also in France and China while
with
people to people ambassadors program.
